A simple date-range table treats every year the same, but the Sun's actual position shifts slightly year to year due to the slow wobble of Earth's axis (precession). Most of the time this doesn't change your sign, but for anyone born within a day or two of a sign boundary, a fixed lookup table can genuinely give the wrong answer.
